SQ001A - Etching

This is a print taken from one of the copper records that Copper Sounds use in their experimental DJ sets. These records were made using the same traditional etching techniques that have been used for centuries by artists such as Rembrandt and Goya. Instead of using this process to make visual images Copper Sounds use these ancient techniques to make noise. Through lots of experimentation they have developed an understanding about which marks make certain noises when played on a record player and therefore were able to develop and create rhythms in these copper plates. By physically making their own records and playing them on turntables they gained an understanding about not only how sound can be stored and reproduced but also a knowledge about a wide range of materials, processes and technologies.
